A telecommuting pioneer's call center revolution
Small Business Features on CNN &bull Feb 23, 2010
Often, Ball was forced to hire just about anyone who walked in the door because few people were willing to commute to the call center and sit in a sterile cubicle for minimum wage. When Ball and his partner Steve Rockwood sold the call center in 1997, they decided the next business would be radically different: Customer service agents would work from home. The idea was slow to catch on with customers. EAS Sports Supplements was the first to sign on with the new business, called Alpine Access. Then a few others followed, including… Full Story »

Small Business Features on CNN &bull Feb 22, 2010
The Small Business Administration landed $375 million last year in Recovery Act money to temporarily reduce fees and increase the guarantees banks receive on loans made through the agency's lending programs. That money ran out just before Thanksgiving. Congress appropriated another $125 million in December to extend the incentives through February. The SBA warned lenders late last week that the remaining cash is about to… Full Story »

New credit card rules' double standard
Small Business Features on CNN &bull Feb 22, 2010
The bill Congress passed in May reforms the Truth in Lending Act, which governs only consumer credit. The measure fulfills a wish list of long-sought reforms. Issuers won't be able to hike the interest rates on existing balances as long as customers pay their bills on time, and they'll need to notify customers at least 45 days in advance of interest rate increases and most fee changes. Regulation is often a dirty word to small business owners, but few would object… Full Story »

Lost money? Score a whopping tax refund
Small Business Features on CNN &bull Feb 16, 2010
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Sick of sending big checks to the IRS? For some business owners, this tax season will bring a rare reversal: A stimulus-fueled tax change is putting cash back into the pockets of qualifying entrepreneurs. Bill Hewitt, who owns several real estate ventures in Denver, recently collected a $150,000 refund check from the IRS thanks to the new tax rules. Without that money, I probably would have gone under, he says. When you can't get any loans from anybody, it kept me alive. Hewitt took advantage of a tax maneuver called loss carryback. When a business books… Full Story »

More of the Self Employed Incorporate
Small Biz Trends &bull Feb 15, 2010
Although the incorporated share of self-employment declined slightly last year, the trend over the past two decades has been towards increased incorporation. In the figure below, I've plotted the incorporated share of self-employment since 1989 using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Since 1989, the share of non-agricultural self-employment that is incorporated has increased almost ten percentage points from 27.8 percent to 37.1 percent. The pattern is pretty similar when the agricultural sector is included. This trend is about as close to a… Full Story »
